Abstract

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the dominant intraseasonal variability in the tropics and largely affects the tropical climate and weather. In addition, its influence reaches over the higher latitudes through interaction with monsoons, El Nino, tropical cyclone, and others.To advance our knowledge of the MJO convective initiation, an international field campaign called CINDY2011 was carried out in and around the central Indian Ocean, where the most MJO convections develop.Observations were carried out using various platforms including ships, moorings, and land-based sites.
