Multi beam echo sounder (MR14-03 - )

The system transmits the shape echo sounder beam from the transmitter and receives the beam reflected from the seabed using the hydrophone. The water depth is calculated from the travel time of the beam between the transmitter and the receiver.

Multi-narrow beam echo sounder manufactured by SeaBeam Instruments is used on R/V Mirai. The system emits multiple acoustic beams from ship's bottom, and simultaneously receives their reflected beam from sea floor. Thus the ocean floor topography is clarified by this system. Moreover, the composition of sea floor material is revealed by strength of echoes.

Shipboard gravimeter

This gravimeter consists of a highly damped, spring type gravity sensor mounted on a gyro stabilized platform with associated electronics for obtaining gravity reading. The length of the spring which supports a weight in the tub is measured and the gravity is calculated.

Three component magnetometer

Geomagnetic field strength resolved into X, Y and Z components is measured by this instrument. This sensor is fixed on an aluminum platform mounted on the top part of foremast to minimize magnetic influences of ship's hull and manmade noises.

Cesium magnetometer

With this equipment, the geomagnetic field strength of sea area is mesured. In order to avoid magnetic influence of hull, the sencor is towed approximately 400m off the stern.
