Ecology, physiology
Juveniles known as temporal ectoparasites of fishes but adults non-feeding benthic dwellers. Females semelparous. Adult males in some species reported to form harem in benthic substrata such as sponges.
Morphology
In adults, first pereopods modified as pylopods covering buccal cavity. Pereonite 7 reduced and lacking appendages. Thus, bearing only 5 pairs of walking legs against 7 pairs of general isopods. Larval mouthparts stylet-like and gnathopod (=pylopod in adults) with hooked unguis prehensible. Pleon narrower than pereon. Pleotelson forms tail-fan. Adults sexually dimorphic. Mandibles in male adults large and forwardly projected.
Distribution, biogeography
Exclusively marine. Cosmopolitan. Known from intertidal zone to thousands meters depth.
Size
Generally small. Body length of most species not beyond 1 cm.
