General
Physiculus japonicus is a morid fish recorded from the continental shelves and upper slope areas around Japan. A barbel is present on the chin, and rays in the first dorsal fin are never elongated. The ventral light organ is located behind a line between bases of ventral fins (Nakabo, 2000). The maximum total length attains 35 cm. The species has been recorded from the Pacific coast of Japan, the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea, and the depth range is 150-880 m (Nakabo, 2000; Senou, 2008).
