Outline of Main Research Theme for
Research Vessel “MIRAI” during fiscal year 2009
1. Cruise Code : |

2. Main research theme: |
Interactions between climate variability and changing ocean ecosystem dynamics and biogeochemical cycles. |

3. Objectives: |
As a part of the main research theme, shipboard observation/experiments will be conducted at two time series stations in the western Pacific subarctic (K2: 47N/160E) and subtropical (S1: 27N/138E) gyres to study responses to Asian monsoon of ecosystem dynamics and biogeochemical cycles in two contrasting oceanographic conditions. Emphasis will be placed on describing seasonal variability of oceanic responses in order to detect long-term variability and/or trend. Processes to be studied include every aspect of end-to-end food web dynamics and biogeochemical cycles at two time-series stations. Intra-seasonal short term variability will be studied by visiting the stations twice during the cruise with aid of various moored instruments. It is envisioned that, from a series of research cruises with this main theme, an integrated and comprehensive understanding on seasonal variability of end-to-end food web dynamics and biogeochemical cycles in response to seasonal change of Asian monsoon could be achieved from as many as possible viewpoints and disciplines by close collaboration with external participants of widely distributing disciplines and ideas. Two short legs in a cruise may facilitate easier participation for the research community. This is the first winter cruise in a series of time-series cruises. |
