Outline of Research Cruise for

Research Vessel "MIRAI" during Fiscal Year 2001

1. Cruise Code:

MR01-K04

2. Main Research Theme:

Experiment in Arctic and sub-arctic oceanic region

3. Objectives:

Recent studies have given a light on a scientific context that remarkable variability in the atmosphere and the ocean are strongly connected to global climate changes in the arctic and sub-arctic oceanic regions. Nevertheless, the hard sea condition has prevented us from adequate understandings of those variability, especially, of DECCEN time scale.

In this cruise, a WHP like observation will be carried out in the sub-tropical/sub-arctic regions in the Eastern North Pacific. In the arctic region, the sea ice condition will confine our activity only in the southern end of the Chukchi Sea and the Bering Sea. A port will be made at Seward before the entrance to the arctic region.

4. Outline of Observation:

In the Eastern North Pacific, WHP P17 will be re-visited in the north of 30N. Main apparatus will be CTD+RMS and LADCP. The number of bottles on RMS will be either 24 or 36 at each P17 station. Observation items using sampled waters are planned to be, at least, Salinity, DO, nutrients, freons (11, 12, 133), TOC, delta 14C. IN the Chukchi and the Bering Sea, several CTD+RMS stations will be occupied with the bottom core sampling, if needed. Salinity, DO and nutrients will be analyzed using sampled water. Ocean ridar system will be operated at tens of stations both in the sub-arctic and the arctic regions.
