FY2002Public Invitation for Utilizing the Oceanographic Research Vessel "MIRAI"

Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC), continuously from the last year, invites research themes and on board researchers for joint utilization of the oceanographic research vessel R/V MIRAI on her FY2002 voyages, which are carried out under the long-term plan for observation and research to be conducted by public use of R/V MIRAI for 10years period. R/V MIRAI, with her excellent features for navigation as a research ship and with various high-tech observation equipments, is expected to contribute to understanding and prediction of global environmental changes such as global warming.

The Essentials of Invitation

1. Invited themes:
Research themes which can be conducted within the planned five voyage-periods and research area shown in the "FY2002 Operation Plan of R/V "MIRAI" .

2. Application period: 18July〜17August 2001
Deadline: Postmarked by 17 August 2001

3.Qualifications:
(A) Domestic : Researchers in Japan belonging universities and other institutes
(B) Overseas : Researchers who can apply through their joint researchers qualified as(A)
Contact Research Support Dept.(*), if applicants are considering proposals that will extend further to FY2003 and /or FY2004.

4.Number of researchers to be admitted: Approximately 28 persons per voyage

5.Method of invitation:
Invitation details to be delivered extensively to related research organizations as well as informed in the INTERNET home page. The address is "http://www.jamstec.go.jp"

6.Selection procedure:
Screening and selection process will be performed by the R/V MIRAI Operation Planning Committee around the end of August 2001, considering the degree of contribution to the main research themes shown in the long-term plan and in "the FY2002 Operation Plan of R/V MIRAI". Notice of the result will be sent around the end of September 2001.

7.Boarding Expenses:
JAMSTEC will pay boarding expenses inside of Japan to relevant researchers admitted to board R/V MIRAI according to the JAMSTEC rule about traveling expenses for R/V MIRAI public use.

8.Presentation of the research results:
Results of the research using R/V MIRAI must be presented at an annual "MIRAI Symposium" which is held in the year, when R/V MIRAI is used for the research or following years.
