Outline of Research Cruises for
Oceanographic Research Vessel "MIRAI"
during fiscal year 2003
:: BACK

:: Cruise Code
MR04-K01

:: Main Research Theme
The Study of Air-Sea Interaction in the Tropics

:: Objectives
The aim of the cruise is to obtain the various data especially focussing on precipitation to reveal its mechanism of the convection developed over the warm water pool in the tropical western Pacific region, where air-sea interaction is very active. The evaluation of the precipitation effect onto the ocean surface structure is also an important theme of this study. Main target is an well-organized cloud cluster that is often observed during the active phase of the equatorial intraseasonal oscillation (Madden-Julian Oscillation).

:: Outline of Observation
Stationary observation near the area (2N, 138.5E) will be conducted for most observation period as much as possible. (Maximum two weeks is expected.) Continuous Doppler radar observation and the launch of radiosonde conducted every 3 hours are the main observation items. In addition, CTD casting down up to 1000m depth, shipboard ADCP, surface meteorological measurement, ceilometer observation will also be conducted routinely.
