Outline of Research Cruises for Research Vessel "MIRAI"
during fiscal year 2004

1. Cruise code :
MR04-K05

2. Main research theme:
Studies on Arctic Ocean circulation linked to Arctic climate system

3. Objectives:
The overarching goal is to prepare for global change and to reduce uncertainties in forecasting, a substantial improvement in our fundamental understanding of processes controlling variability in Arctic climate systems; specifically: of shelf/basic interactions; and inter-basin forcing of ice and water properties of land/ocean exchanges. This cruise mainly focuses on the "water mass circulation" which establishes proper condition for ice cover. Key water masses are Pacific Winter and Summer Waters, Atlantic Mackenzie and Siberian River Waters, and Melt Waters.

4. Outline of observation:
- CTD and water samplings
- Underway observations (XCTD, ADCP)
- Mooring deployment and recovery
- Multi-beam sonar

5. Main research area:
Arctic Ocean (Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea, Canada Basin)(exclude the Russian EEZ)

6. Ports of call:
Port of Departure : Dutch Harbor

(Arctic Ocean)

Returning port : Dutch Harbor

7. Cruise period:
31 August 2004 - 11 October 2004(42 days)
The actual duration of field experiments north of the Bering Strait:
3 September 2004 - 8 October 2004 (36 days)

8. Chief scientist on board:
Koji Shimada

9. Contact person for questionnaire on this cruise:

10. Notes
(1) 36 bottles with 12 L Rossete sampler is scheduled to be used. Basically, one cast at one station is planned.
(2) We hope participations of geochemical teams who focus on water mass circulation and mixing.
(3) Ice condition strongly influences the schedule of the cruise.
(4) Basically no science station is planned in the Bering Sea except underway observations.
