Outline of Main Research Theme for
Research Vessel “MIRAI”
during fiscal year 2006 |
 |
1. Cruise Code : |
|

2. Main research theme : |
Leg-1: |
The Study of the Air-Sea Interaction in the
Tropics |
Leg-2: |
Tropical Ocean Climate Study |
* |
The name of the whole cruise is "MISMO"
(Mirai Indian Ocean cruise for the Study of the MJO-convection
Onset). |
|

3. Objectives : |
The Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) is the dominant
intraseasonal variability in the Tropics. The MJO influences
not only the tropical climate but also the variability of precipitation
and other many atmospheric and oceanic parameters over the world
through the interaction with the monsoon, El Nino, and so on.
The objective is to understand the characteristics of the atmospheric
and oceanic variability in the equatorial Indian Ocean during
the season of onset of convections in the MJO. For this purpose,
the stationary observation in the first leg and the maintenance
of TRITON buoys in the second leg will be the major missions,
respectively. |
|

4. Outline of observation : |
In the first leg, the stationary observation
at (0, 80E) will be carried out from the late October through
the late November about one month. The period and location were
decided by referring the past studies. During this intensive
period, various atmospheric and oceanographic observations including
Doppler radar, radiosonde, CTD, ADCP, and so on will be carried
out. Deployments of several moorings will also be conducted
before the stationary observation.
In the second leg, two TRITON buoys and one sub-surface ADCP
mooring will be replaced with new ones. In addition, one m-TRITON
buoy will be deployed at (1.5S, 90E). CTD observations as well
as surface atmospheric / oceanographic measurement will also
be carried out. |
|

5. Main research area : |
Leg-1: |
(2N-2S, 80E-90E)
Stationary observation for one month will be carried out at
(0, 80E). |
Leg-2: |
(5N-5S, 80E-95E)
TRITON mooring sites are (1.5S, 90E) and (5S, 95E).
Sub-surface ADCP mooring and m-TRITON will be deployed at (1.5S,
90E). |
|
