Outline of Main Research Theme for
Research Vessel “MIRAI” during fiscal year 2007

1. Cruise Code :
MR08-01

2. Main research theme :
Tropical Ocean Climate Study

3. Objectives :
For the better understanding of El Nino and Asian Monsoon, which affect the social and economical activities in the East Asia counties including Japan, we will conduct the observational studies on the oceanic and atmospheric variability from intra-seasonal to inter-annual time scales in the Indo-Pacific warm water pool region. We aim to elucidate the surface mixed layer process and inter-hemisphere water exchange, which may control the climate system in the region.

4. Outline of observation :
Major missions are to recover and to deploy the TRITON surface moorings and ADCP subsurface moorings. In the western Pacific area, the four TRITON moorings will be recovered and deployed along 138E, and the two ones will be along 130E. In the eastern Indian ocean area, two TRITON mooring will be recovered and deployed. The one ADCP moorings will be recovered and deployed in the research area. CTD measurements up to 1000m depth will be carried out around the mooring deployment area.

5.Main research area :
Western tropical Pacific Ocean
19N-137E to Eq-138E, and 19N-126E to Eq-126E
TRITON mooring sites are 8N, 5N, 2N, Eq along 137-138E, 8N, 2N along 130E, 1.5S-90E, 5S-95E

Eastern Indian Ocean
5N-90E to 5S-95E via 5S-90E
TRITON mooring sites are 1.5S-90E, 5S-90E,
these mooring systems may subject to change to the small size TRITON mooring system
ADCP mooring site is Eq 90E

6. Cruise period:
5 Jan- 9 March, 2008 (65days)
