生態・生理
幼体は魚類の一時的外部寄生虫として知られる。一方、成体は不摂食で底生生活を行う。雌は生涯一回産卵。ある種の雄は海綿などの棲息基質中にハーレムを形成することが知られている。
形態
成体の第 1 胸肢は葉状となって口部を腹側から覆う。また、胸部第 7 節は縮小して付属肢を欠く。そのため、一般的な等脚類の 7 対に対し、5 対しか歩脚を有さない。幼生の口器は針状。第 1 胸肢は曲がったかぎ爪を有し、把握的。腹部は胸部よりも幅が狭く、腹尾節は尾扇を形成する。成体は性的二型が著しく、雄の大顎は発達して前方に突出する。
分布・生物地理
世界の海洋に広く分布。潮間帯から数千メートルの深海まで棲息している。
サイズ
一般に小型で、多くの種で体長 1 cm 以下。
