以前には、日本でムカデノリと呼ばれていたものは Grateloupia filicina であると同定されていた。しかし、Kawaguchi et al. (2001) により、東アジア（日本および中国北部）に生息するものは別の種であることが指摘され、本種 Grateloupia asiatica が新種記載された。
