General
Polychaete worms belonging to the genus Osedax are known to occur on decomposing whale carcasses on sea floors. The body is composed of root structures running within the matrix of the bone substratum, elongated trunk and palps emergent from upper part of trunk. Osedax species lack digestive tract both in larvae and adults, and live on nutrition provided by symbiotic bacteria housed in the roots. Osedax japonicus is the first species of the genus from western Pacific, and was recorded from the carcasses of sperm whales deposited at the depths of 224-250 m off Cape Nomamisaki, southwestern tip of Kyushu Island, Japan (Fujikura et al., 2006; Fujiwara et al., 2007). Palps are 1.0-7.0 mm in length and the cylindrical trunk attains approximately 9 mm in length. The species has the oviduct terminating at the end of the trunk against congeners with long oviduct projecting between palps.
