概要
ホネクイハナムシ属に属する多毛類は海底に沈んだ鯨骨上に生育することが知られる。その体は基質となる鯨骨内部に埋没した樹根状栄養体部と中体部、中体部先端に付属する鰓冠からなる。本属の種の成体は消化管を欠き、樹根状栄養体部の組織中の共生細菌に栄養的に依存している。このうち、ホネクイハナムシは西太平洋産のものとして最初に見つかった種であり、九州の野間岬沖に沈設された鯨遺骸から記録されている (Fujikura et al., 2006; Fujiwara et al., 2007)。鰓は長さ 1.0-7.0 mm で、中体部は 9 mm 程度に達する。同属他種の輸卵管開口部が長いのに対して、本種のそれは短い。
