概要
エゾイバラガニはカリフォルニアからアラスカに至るアメリカの太平洋岸から日本の太平洋岸に広く分布するタラバガニ類の 1 種である(Sakai, 1971; Wicksten, 1989; Hendrickx & Harvey, 1999)。甲は洋梨型で、その表面は多数の棘で覆われる。甲面の棘の先端はしばしば切断されたような形状で、円形や楕円形の面を示す(Sakai, 1971)。エゾイバラガニは化学合成群集に特異的な種ではないが、相模湾の湧水域や沖縄トラフの鳩間海丘、伊平屋海嶺のような熱水噴出域でもしばしば観察される(Ohta & Kim, 2001; Martin & Haney, 2005)。
