2024/02/08: The dataset of "Specimen collection of Japanese mud shrimp (Upogebia major) in Japan" has been published on BISMaL. The dataset is based on specimens collected from June 2020 to July 2022, and published as Kitabatake et al. (2023).

2024/01/04: The first dataset in 2024, Simultaneous surveys of littoral organisms in Osaka Bay, has been published on BISMaL.
The dataset is the result of the survey conducted by the Osaka Bay Environmental Restoration Liaison Committee in cooperation with groups working along the Osaka Bay.

2023/09/04: The dataset of "Decline in the Acropora population due to repeated moderate disturbances in Okinotorishima Island, Japan" has been published on BISMaL.
This dataset compiles data on coverage and number of colonies of Acropora and co-occurring corals published in Yamamoto et al. (2023).

2023/06/07: The dataset of "Marine decapod crustaceans of the San'in District" has been published on BISMaL.
The dataset generated from publications of biogeographical information on anomuran and brachyuran Crustacea that inhabit the coastal and brackish waters of the San’in region.

Environmental baseline data in abyssal plain off Minami Torishima based on physicochemical parameters and meiofauna community obtained from the 2022 cruise.
These datasets contain data from the cruises in 2022 in SIP Ocean program.

2023/03/30: A dataset has been updated on BISMaL: Plankton image dataset from a cabled observatory system (JEDI System/OCEANS) deployed at coastal area of Oshima island, Tokyo, Japan.
Plankton images are available from the URLs in the DarwinCore term of assciatedMedia, now! Occurrence records in the dataset were generated from these images.

2023/03/28: A deep-sea fish favicon is now available to make it easier to find BISMaL among many tabs or bookmarks!

2023/03/14: A new dataset has been published on BISMaL:

Plankton image dataset from a cabled observatory system (JEDI System/OCEANS) deployed at coastal area of Oshima island, Tokyo, Japan.
The dataset contains data from plankton images taken during 2014 to 2016 by the system and identified using machine learning.

The datasets were produced by the results from surveys in intertidal zones around Hatakejima Island for a long period conducted by Seto Marine Biological Laboratory, Kyoto University.

2018/10/05: Information on background map.
BISMaL had used Google Map as a background map to display biological occurrence records. On October 5, 2018, we stated to use Natural Earth (Made with Natural Earth. Free vector and raster map data @ naturalearthdata.com.) as a new background map.
Concurrently, we closed BISMaL Mapper service. Thank you for using BISMaL Mapper for a long time.

2015/12/11: Dataset "Shallow-water fauna of Sagami Bay" was provided by Discover Blue.
This dataset contains data of shallow-water fauna of Sagami bay which were collected during biological observation meeting by Discover Blue and citizen (see more details).

2015/04/01: JAMSTEC has become an Associate Data Unit (ADU) of IOC (UNESCO) on January, 19th, 2015 (see more details). The OBIS node of Japan changed the name of the office from Japan Regional OBIS Node (J-RON) to Japan Ocean Biogeographic Information System Center (J-OBIS) and moved its headquarter office to Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC) of JAMSTEC on April, 1st. BISMaL will continue to accept and publish the datasets from J-OBIS and to provide those datasets to OBIS as the activities of Japan.

2013/07/02: New online visualization/mapping tool for occurrence records of marine organisms, BISMaL Mapper for Marine Species Distribution (BISMaL Mapper), is now available. The new tool has been developed as the subsystem of BISMaL and enables to create a distribution map of marine species or figure representing the spatial variation of marine biodiversity easily and quickly.

2013/04/15: New version of BISMaL is now available. You may explore occurrence records of marine organisms in the new page with filtering records by geographic areas/regions, taxon names and datasets. Additionally, several new functions, including an incremental search for scientific names during text search, are released.

2011年

2011/11/30: BISMaL has been just modified following the launch of the "JAMSTEC E-library of Deep-sea Images", a new database of the Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC). The JAMSTEC E-library of Deep-sea images was launched to replace databases, the "Deep sea Video Database", "Deep sea Video Cast" and "Deep sea Image Database".
Photographs as well as videos of deep sea animals published on the new database are now available on BISMaL!

2011/07/01: Descriptions on top page have been updated due to functional enhancement of BISMaL in the first quater of 2011. Links to data summary and a dataset list of BISMaL have also been added.
